ANTICIPATED
There is something curious about painting a place from the other side of a screen, constructing moments that have not yet happened and spaces I have never physically occupied. Increasingly, this is how we first encounter the world around us: through images, forming impressions of places before experiencing them for ourselves.
For Anticipated, that distance became part of the process. What began as an attraction to particular interiors developed into an exploration of how a place can be observed, interpreted and imagined before ever being there.
Composition became central to this exploration. At times I responded closely to a single viewpoint; at others, I considered multiple vantage points, making decisions about what to include, what to leave out and where to direct the eye. Even when working closely from a single image, the act of painting introduces another layer of experience. Decisions around composition, colour, emphasis and omission become traces of my own attention, shifting the image from a record of a place into an interpretation of it.
In this way, the painting becomes as much a record of looking as it is a record of place. My experience of observing and interpreting the image becomes embedded within the work, before the viewer brings their own experience to the scene.
