MEASURED
I find certain rhythms in the way an interior is constructed. In Measured, these relationships became the starting point for a series of paintings exploring how repeated lines, architectural elements and soft form can shape the way a place is perceived.
Through the process of painting, elements are simplified, emphasised or omitted entirely, adjusting perspective and directing the viewer’s eye through the work. In one painting, a cup and saucer remain while the chair you might expect to accompany them is missing, creating a question around what has happened. In another, cutlery has been removed from a table, leaving an absence that might suggest someone has left, is yet to arrive, or simply draw attention to something we expect to be there.
I like the idea of giving the viewer only a fragment from which to construct the rest of the scene, inviting them to actively participate in the painting. By considering the quiet structures and objects that underpin our surroundings, I hope these paintings encourage a closer kind of looking and a greater awareness of the details we might otherwise pass by in everyday life.
